Trev's Vintage Boats and Motors

I have a small but growing collection of vintage outboard motors, and a couple of old boats to run them on.

I'll try to have a picture and a blurb here on each of them. It's always useful to find people out there with similar motors, because a lot of the repair know-how is just word of mouth.

Into old motors? Consider joining the The Antique Motor Club.

Feather Craft Deluxe Runabout

The above is my main boat and motor combination. It's also a nice picture so it deserves to be right up front. It's an approximately 1954 Feather Craft Deluxe Runabout, with a 1955 Mercury Mk55e motor. It's taken at my cottage on Lac du Cardinal, just north of Ottawa, Canada. Click here or on the image for more pictures and stories on this boat.

June 2006: Some videos... all taken on my 1954 Feathercraft cartopper...
  • 1923 Elto Ruddertwin (2.4M)
  • 1927 Johnson K-35 (1.2M)
  • 1938 Elto Handitwin (2.5M)
  • 1946 Elgin 301... (2.3M)
  • 1960s Champion 3.5hp... (0.3M)
  • 2002 First mate... (0.5M)

  • [ Trev's Motors ]   This is the obligatory s-eating-grin shot. This is a 1938 Elto Handitwin on my 1967 Starcraft Starfish. Nice combination. The Elto starts first pull often enough, and is pretty smooth out there. Don't be in a hurry. More elto shots... 1 2 3 .

[ Trev's Motors ]   This is what the Elto and Starfish look like on land.

[ Trev's Motors ]   This is a 1961 Merc 60. It's a nice little 6hp twin. This picture was taken on the Reservoir du Poisson Blanc. (Lac du Poisson Blanc, aka: White Fish Lake) It's about a 10 minute trailer ride from the cottage lake.

[ Trev's Motors ]   First mate ready for the ride.
    Summer 2004
[ Trev's Motors ]   Wife and first mate enjoying the trip. It was actually pretty windy and wavy that day.
    Summer 2004
[ Trev's Motors ]   This is a 1927 Johnson K-35. It's a bigger heavier and stronger motor than the Elto. It actually moves the Starcraft along pretty briskly. Alone, you can usually plane it, which is pretty scary on a motor with so many controls. One more image..., and also three pics of the parts motor (1, 2, 3)
    Summer 2004
[ Trev's Motors ]   K-35 on the back of the Starcraft.

    [ Trev's Motors ]   K-35 on the Starcraft again.
    June 2005
[ Trev's Motors ]   Nothing is every perfect though. This is a long thin crack on the foot of the K-35. No doubt it has once frozen up. I need to get this welded up.
    Summer 2004
[ Trev's Motors ]   The flywheel thread is also bunged up... (another pic), ruined because some hamfist put on the wrong nut which had a different thread.
    January 2005
[ Trev's Motors ]   The K-35 stitched back up again with the correct flywheel nut. Thanks Greg!
    March 2005
[ Trev's Motors ]   This is the Merc 200 on my automotive hoist. It's actually pretty convenient, I raise it up, slide a garbage pail full of water under it, and lower it down for testing.
    Summer 2004
[ Trev's Motors ]   This is a 1953 Evinrude Fastwin I owned for a few months. I just couldn't talk myself into starting it. It's ok, it was very profitable, I bought it for the price of a coffee, and sold it for enough to buy a hamburger. (Good luck Rick)
    Summer 2004
[ Trev's Motors ]   Back at the lab. There are 21 cylinders in this photo. Can you find 'em all?
    Winter 2004
[ Trev's Motors ]   Ok, clean up that mess, here's my swell new motor stand! Two more pics: 1 2
    February 2005
    [ Trev's Motors ]   Project... this is a late-1940s Elgin 301. The full model number is 571.58301. It's a 1.2hp air cooled single.
    December 2005
[ Trev's Motors ]   Appears to have weak spark. The points have been replaced with an electronic ignition module, which is harder to debug. I'll replace it with points when I can find some.
    December 2005
[ Trev's Motors ]   This is a 1923 Elto Ruddertwin. Knucklebuster starting, rope steering, and battery ignition. This is actually a video still, I was running it at the time and taking video.

    [ Trev's Motors ]   Chris Scratch's fine Alumacraft Deep C and Mercury Mk55.
    July 2006
[ Trev's Motors ]   A rare glimpse of him actually at the helm...
    July 2006
[ Trev's Motors ]   He still needs to raise that motor a smidgen...
