Upgrade day. Parking my old 1983 Corolla SR-5 at my parents house
and driving home in the Celica. May 1996 |

Front Driver's Side. These are the alloy rims. I also have a set of winter tires
on ugly rims for when the Canadian winter hits. It's amazing how much less attractive
the car is on the ugly rims. June 1997 |

This was the car that the Celica replaced, a 1983 Toyota Corolla SR-5. By
the time this pic was taken it was pretty decrepit and salt ravaged... but
it wasn't always that way... circa 1995 |

This picture is about a decade old, but there I am, Mr. Cool
himself. This was probably taken the day after I got this
car, my first. No feeling like it. Growing up in the era
of the hot-hatch, this was a pretty sweet ride. circa 1990 |

Here's another old pic of my Corolla. Beside it is my friend's 3TC corolla. It was
a little older but was in nice shape and some nice aftermarket goodies. circa 1990 |

Well it had to happen, eventually I was going to get the elusive
tow truck photo of the Celica. It completes the set, I now have
every car caught red handed. December 1998 |

I look on, as the second magnette sleeps under a
snowy car cover. December 1998 |

As expected, the culprit was a broken timing belt. This is a non-interference
engine so no damage done other than the price of the tow. Which is why I
hadn't changed it. It's only an optional service, sort of hard to
justify doing a maintenance job when the worst case failure is the
same amount of work, just without choice of venue. December 1998 |

Hard to believe, but it took me several hours to remove everything
to get to this stage. The engine bay still looks packed, but already
removed or unbolted here are the alternator, alternator belt, power steering
belt, power steering reservoir, cruise control, two timing belt
covers, two underbody panels, and one engine mount. December 1998 |

Here's a view of the new belt installed. This view is
from underneath, with the access panel removed. There is about
one inch of room between the belt and the immovable strut
tower, so it's bruised knuckles for the whole job. Actually, this
image is misleading because it makes the area look open. But I
took this picture by pushing the camera in blind, aiming it as
a best guess, and pushing the button. December 1998 |
