Junk Yard Treasures

No real reason for this page, but I had a bunch of pictures from a digital camera that were taken during a recent junkyard trip. I also had a few older ones around this site, so I sorted them into here.

I am a big fan of Practical Classics Magazine's Rust in Peace section, and hey, here is my chance to have my own. You'll have to forgive me if I emulate their tone of voice a little too obviously.

All of these images are thumbnails, click on the image to see a larger version.

[ A junkyard treasure... ]   The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one. This poor 1974-ish Midget is a willing donor to my car. A sway bar, some trim pieces, and so on. Likely more to come.
February 1997
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   A close look shows that it's donated to a few cars before it helped mine.

[ A junkyard treasure... ]   That's me in the white shirt.
I forget what loot I am carrying, but I look busy. A V12 "JagHenge" exhibit shows it's lovely engine, ripe for picking. A blue jag saloon also looks on sadly.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   This is sort of an MG row. The two at left are spridget shells. The reddish one is junk, but the grey one is a mystery. It's repaired and primed, kind of sad really. If you look closely, the gas cap is still in masking tape!
On the right, in a row, Porsche 911, white MGB-GT (I took some interior panels but left the shag carpet), and a few more B roadsters including one just visible behind the GT.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Nice restorable B. This one runs very well and is for sale. Last two times I was there they were working on it, so I guess the longer you wait the price goes up but the car gets nicer. A green jag saloon in great shape awaits as well.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Same white B. I believe it's a 1972. In the background I am checking out an early 70s blue B. Also in the row, a white Morris Minor, a black saloon (a Riley?) and a pair of hardtops for models unknown.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Late TR3. It's engine and overdrive transmission are stored inside, but it's mostly there. Might be a project for some masochist.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Same TR3. The car in front of it is a TR7. I believe that is a spridget in the upper right, the same blue one I took the sway bar from last year.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Blue Healey. Apparently this is a customer car being stored at the site, but it's been there a very long time. Behind it is another two big Healey hulks. Just in front of it is a frame from either a TR3 or a TR4, with a TR3 bootlid. Leaning on the front bumper of the blue Healey is a pair of TR3 rear fenders.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   It's actually in really good shape, even the paint... there must be a good reason why it's not out there on the road. Just beside the two barrels, an unknown engine is sitting. I looked at it for a bit and read "Diesel" so I lost interest.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   A running TR6 in the front lot. In the back row, a Land Rover, a white Volvo with fresh paint (and even fresher rear end damage) a Bentley saloon, and three jag XKs.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Another XK shows up in this pic, and a pair of unknown saloons. (and a blue Mercedes that somebody probably commuted here in)
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   These darker pics are taken inside. This is a MkII spitfire in excellent condition, flanked on both sides with E-type jags.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   The rims are functional, but not original. Behind it, the E-type's bonnet is titled up showing a well mothballed engine bay.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   ...guess it needs a new top. Looks like the typical southern car. Around here, the bodies rust away but the cloth, vinyl, and rubber is fine. Cars from the south usually have great bodies but all the cloth, vinyl, and rubber is dried out and garbage.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   A couple of E-type jag bodies in storage. Someday, one might be mine.
The shelf on the wall on the right is stacked with dozens of transmissions.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Another Healey sits in a pile of parts. This stuff is all inside so I guess it was deemed "better". These people should apply for a Heritage grant or something so that everything can be stored inside. I've only been visiting the place for a few years and even in that time a lot of the stuff has seriously degraded.
August 1998
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   This was a "barn find". Typical scene I guess, TR3 in a barn under a lot of crap. Typical story too, had a minor failure (fuel pump) and was taken off the road for what turned out to be decades.
circa 1995
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   The interior was full of fiberglass and other crap. There was a dead fox right beside the car. The car had some good qualities but would have needed a lot. I didn't buy the car because the owner wanted a little too much for a car in this situation.
circa 1995
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Does a canoe count as a hard top?
circa 1995
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Just this part was visible, it was in a makeshift shed that also held an enormous 50's cadillac. Funny story about the cadillac, some time after it was parked in the shed the house was expanded back almost to the car. Moral of the story, the mid-twenty-foot cadillac was completely trapped. I never found out what happened, but something would have to be knocked down to extricate the car in one piece.
circa 1995
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   This is another local junkyard. It's in the back of a restoration and repair shop, in an industrial park. The cars along the left are likely for sale or in for repairs, in the back is the 'yard. The blue E-type is mine.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   The grass is very tall, there are literally cars totally invisible until you bump into them.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Some rusty MGBs guard the entrance to the "overgrown zone". Notice the green one that is folded in the middle like a jackknife..
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   A running GT6 and a not-far-from-running TR7 preside over some much unluckier vehicles.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Bs and Volvos and Minis oh my!
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   A B-GT, a Land Rover, two Jag XJ-Ss, and a Jag saloon. That leather seat looks a little too nice to be wasting away in the elements.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   Way in the deep grasses, a TR-7 and a few more Bs.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   A view of the lineup from the back. Again, the E is mine.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   A Morris 8 that is for sale, in decent shape. It looks like it was getting some freshening up.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   I believe this is a Beva kit car, it's in the Lotus/Caterham vein. These are made locally so you see a few of them around here.
July 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   I found this place just driving down Ontario #7 Highway near Kaladar. In a stand by the side of the road, more hubcaps than you would consider believable. Without an aerial photo, I cannot express how many rows and rows of hubcaps this place had.
November 2000
[ A junkyard treasure... ]   By weird coincidence, we were in the Tercel which needed a hubcap, and no surprise, they had one. The "office" had no lights and no heat, but the prices were good. It was close to dusk so the pictures don't do it justice.
